A good start to 2010/11 with a seven goal haul against newly formed Preston Sunday league side New Longton Rovers at School Lane Longton.
Ryan Wright opened the scoring after a neat pass from Gav White, just two of the seven debutant's on show, and an own goal soon had the visitors in a comfortable position with a two goal cushion but two replies from the home side cancelled out Portlands good start and it was honours even at the break.
Portland took control of the second period with both White and Taylor forming a solid partnership in the centre of the park.
Ex SHIP FC stalwart Andy Cope ran things superbly from the back
and another ex SHIP colleague Eion Bond rounded off a great performance with a goal in the second half.
Portland leading goal scorer last season Ross Paskin came of the bench to fire in a brace, and a penalty converted by youngster Ryan Wright gave the debutant two goals on his first showing.
Jack Farrington got his name on the sheet with Portlands seventh goal of the game, and the big man must have had plenty of raw meat for breakfast after several run ins with the local official in black had Jack steamed up for most of the match...
Bond,Taylor and Ryan Wright were all unavailable for the clubs second freindly at Hesketh Bank as once again a good workout was rewarded with another win,the second in five days...
Its still early days but the squad is coming together nicely, the signing of Andy "Mush" Cope has but a bit of steel into the defence along with another new signing Gav White who has shone in both games to date.
The only goal of the game was scored midway through the first half by new boy GAV WHITE WHO SENT Paskin clear with a superb pass and raced through to meet the return pass and slot home past the keeper, and although a much fitter home side tested Portland for ninety minutes it was the commitment and attitude that caught the eye of the watching management as the team came through with flying colours..
Next up are TARLETON FC, a team that will once again test the side, but after all, thats what pre-season is all about...
Squad,..WILKINSON,RIMMER,Joe FARRINGTON,Jack FARRINGTON,N,WRIGHT,PASKIN,COTGRAVE,JOHNSON,BIRCH,COPE,WHITE,THOMPSON...and a guest appearance from one of our old boys!

Portland travelled to Tarleton for their annnual pre season game looking for sweet revenge after last seasons 5-0 drubbing and gave a great performance with a small squad of only 12 players after some early morning cry offs depleted the squad somewhat.
Matty Swash played his first pre season game and helped himself to a brace of goals before his departure to Norway and a ten day coaching spell.
Ryan Wright returned after injury and played his part in a good team performance, his part in the opening goal was nothing short of magnificent when he spoted Swash in acres of space and sent him through with a 40 yard inch perfect pass.
The goal cancelled out Tarletons early strike after a mix up in the visitors area allowed Richie Burns to fire home.
Portalnd started with a 4-4-2 formation but soon reverted to a 4-5-1 to combat the pace and fitness of their opponents.
Jimmy Rimmer partnered Andy Cope in the absence of Jack Farrington and put in a sterling performance,Gav White and the veteran Neil Wright stood firm alongside Matty Swash in a three man central midfield allowing both Ryan Wright and Ross Paskin to push on from the flanks.
Eion Bond ran the line as the lone striker and swaped his role with Swash in the second period as the visitors shared the workload with limited numbers on show.
Cotgrave caught the eye when reverting to a right back spot and debutant Stephen Biggs looked like one for the future as the youngster settled in well with his second half performance at left back.
Swash scored his second goal of the game after good work from White but with 5 mins remaining a simple ball over the top caught Cope stranded allowing a forward to place a half volley past Wilkinson in the Portland goal..
Chris Birch had a good run from left back with seconds to go but his cross came to nothing as the clock ticked down.
Honours even and all back to Mere Brow Bowling club for refreshments were unlike last season the visitors were able to enjoy a drink knowing that they had put in a very good display.
Not ideal,no posts up,but we made do with markers and corner flags, and the grass on Meols Park needs a good trim, but still a good work out with a threadbare squad with so many away on holiday and a few early morning cry-offs...
Thanks to Ginge and Theo who made up the eleven players that took on the IMP,who themselves only had the bare eleven...
Two goals from RYAN WRIGHT, two from ROSS PASKIN and a goal each for Ginge and Theo gives us a !00% pre season record....Played 4 won 3 drawn 1...
Next sunday with a bit of luck the posts may well be up when the club takes on PARK FC at Bedford Park, several players will be back from their holidays along with a couple who have recently been unavailable through injury, its always hard to get out a full complement of players pre season but never the less,a decent squad is shaping up ready for the opening league game on Sep 9th...
Two goals each for RYAN WRIGHT and ROSS PASKIN(pictured)

A fine hat trick by ROSS PASKIN gave Portland their fifth pre season victory and keeps their 100% record in tact.
PASKIN and JOE MIDDLETON formed a good attacking partnership that promises to reap the rewards this season as the club continue to assemble what looks to be their strongest squad for last four years.
MIDDLETON,MATTY DAWSON,and JOSH BRIERLY all made their debuts and put in decent performances, with live wire MIDDLETON especially catching the eye.
Park FC played some nice football and may well be up there challenging for 1st Div honours when the season starts in a few weeks.
On a bone hard pitch PASKIN fired in his first with a crisp finish, his second was just as good as he powered in a cracker from 15 yards and a neat penalty finish gave the front man his hatty.
Youngster RYAN WRIGHT showed some silky skills on the left,GAV WHITE and CRAIG TAYLOR gave a solid display in the centre of the park and ANDY "mush" COPE marshaled his troops at the back with a stern hand.
Second half substitute STEVE BALLARD showed glimpses of the silky skills that had Real Madrid watch him as a youngster and
will play his part in this seasons campaign.
EION BOND is another close season signing that will boost the team with his attacking runs down the flanks along with JAY WRIGHT,another wing wizard.
With the clock ticking down to the league kick off every game is a fitness booster, next up is Wednesdays visit to SOUTHPORT AMS at Ferryside Lane..
The final pre season game before it all starts for real matched Portland against Mike Langfords Southport Ams FC..
After a bright start by the visitors with good chances falling to Middleton,Swash, and Paskin,it was the home side who struck first blood to put Portland on the back foot..
Bond levelled with a shot from close range and Joe Middleton added his first of the season soon after from the penalty spot after he was felled inside the box...
Ams were out for a good workout and showed plenty of fire with some tough, and at times, robust challenges...
Ian Thompson should have done better when he sent a free kick wild of the mark and Nealy hit a cyclist on the sea wall....thats how wild it was lol!
With several cry-offs Portland just managed to turn out eleven players, but this seemed to work to their favour as the team worked hard for each other knowing that their opponents could change personal at any time with at least 18 players on show...
Neil Wright rolled back the years with a fantastic performance alongside Ian Thompson in midfield...
Matty Swash worked well on the left and was backed up by Chris Birch who settled in well in the second period after a shaky first half...
Sam Wilkinson was the ever "Mr Dependable" with his safe hands and Andy Cope and Jack Farrington are forming a decent partnership that seems to flourish with every game...
Jimmy Rimmer has been a steady eddy at right back and up front Portland can boast the riches of Paskin,Middleton and Eion Bond...
Master marksman Joe "Miggy" scored four crackers, with his third in particular being the pick of the bunch....
Its been played six,won five and drawn one in pre season against some formidable opponents...well done lads, lets hope for a good start when it all kicks off for real on the 29th with the visit of Scarisbrick Hotel in the Charity cup...
TEAM...WILKINSON,RIMMER,COPE,FARRINGTON,BIRCH,SWASH,N.WRIGHT,THOMPSON,BOND,MIDDLETON,PASKIN.

The first competitive game of any sorts this season paired Portland with last seasons Cup Finalists at a wind swept Bedford Park in the first round of this years competition...
Both sides turned out depleted squads as the Bank Holiday week-end took its toll with abundance of cry offs...
No fewer than eight players made themselves unavailable for the home side who worked wonders to turn out a squad of 14 compared to the visitors 12...
With numbers now swelling the ranks to 25 players the squads rotation policy will come into force at some stage in the season, but for now the chance to nail down a starting place will be taken by those who get to wear a shirt this as players aim to force down a starting position when given the chance....
One player who will be aiming to do such a thing will be centre back Matty Dawson who deputized for the injured Jack Farrington
and picked up a few man of the match votes for his efforts...
Centre mid will be a competitive department this year and Neil Wright gave himself a shot in the arm with a solid display in the absence of Gav White and the benched Craig Taylor...
Another player who has come to the attention of the management is youngster Ryan Wright, his in swinging corner lead to Portlands opener as the keeper could only manage to parry his effort into the net...
In difficult conditions Portland took a strong foothold on the game and with Andy cope at the back exceptional in defence the result of this fixture was never in doubt...
Green,Rimmer and Dawson all played their part in the first half against a strong wind that made defending a nightmare at times...
The influential Joe Middleton added the second after good wing play by Josh Breirley who dazzled on his debut...
A third by Ryan Wright with a clever chip come shot made the game all over as a contest as the visitors showed little to cause any problems for keeper Sam Wilkinson and his solid back four...
Substitute Theo Bassey nipped in to stab home a debut goal for number four as chance's came thick and fast as the visitors tired in the wind swept conditions...
A couple of long range shots were all that Scarisbrick could muster and never really troubled Wilkinson in goal...
A good win with a home tie in round two against HARRINGTON FC..
With players back for mid week to bolster the squad the decision to name a starting eleven will be all the more harder to make for the delighted management team that witnessed a first class performance from all that took part...
A hat trick from Joe Middleton gave the home side a well earned victory over their Div 1 opponents who came to Bedford Park with a tough tackling and boisterous game plan that had referee Dave Taylor reaching for his back pocket to produce three yellow cards for the visitors in stormy blood and thunder cup tie.
Portland worked hard for the victory and had to deal with a players Ariel bombardment from throw in set pieces as his throw was sent in like a bullet from all over the park..
Sam Wilkinson was superb between the sticks as he dealt with everything that was thrown at him and also produced a brilliant save in the second half when he flew across his area to turn a goal bound shot around the post...
Portland started well on a bone hard pitch that made it difficult to control the ball, but when Joe Middleton raced into the area a tackle from behind was immediately spotted by the referee who gave the home side a penalty from which Middleton scored after dusting himself down...
He soon added a second when a mix up by the keeper gifted him another goal to give the home a two goal cushion...
The visitors though had their chances and responded with a powerful strike that gave Wilkinson no chance as it went into the net of the post, moments later the crossbar came to the home sides rescue as a strong header came back of the woodwork and was cleared by a hefty boot...
Tackles flew in fast and furious as the visitors gave a robust performance that at times was border line stuff, one tackle on Ryan Wright was dealt with by referee Taylor who showed a yellow card that could well have been deemed a red on another occasion..
Middleton completed his hat trick late on in the half as the home side finished with a 3-1 scoreline..
The second period was evenly balanced with the visitors unlucky not to get a spot kick when defender Jimmy Rimmer was adjudged to half made a foul right on the edge of the box,but the kick came to nothing...
A late second goal though gave the visitors second wind and with five minutes remaining it produced a nail biting finish, but in the end the game should have been put to bed when Ross Paskin missed two good opportunities to finish off the visitors..
Paskin and Middleton gave their markers problems all night with a fine show,Wright and White worked hard all night and Andy Cope gave a fine performance at the back alongside Rimmer and Jimmy Green...
Ian Thompson had a couple of half chances and did well as an emergency right back,Middleton was a tireless worker and grabbed a great hat trick, but Sam Wilkinson in goal showed just why his is rated as one of the towns best keepers with a brilliant performance...
Pictured...Charity cup squad that were 3-2 winners over HARRINGTON FC.

Two games, two defeats, and although thursday nights encounter with last years runners up Herald produced a great game of football resulting in a narrow defeat Sundays game was in total contrast as eleven players served up a total embarrassment as newly promoted Thornbeck ripped the hosts apart without even breaking sweat...
Portland took part in a totally entertaining game of football on thursday night and came back to level the scores at 1-1 with a neat headed goal by Matty Swash but were beaten 2-1 in the end by a wonder goal from Heralds Sean Wright.
With plenty of positives to take from thursday's performance you would have thought that the team would have been more than a handful for their latest opponents, but some shambolic defending,a lack lustre attitude, and statistics that would have shown not a single shot on goal, all added up to a woeful display.
Injuries and cry offs made team selection impossible as the side could only muster ten fit players with the injured Ross Paskin only a spectator as he took to the field with an injury that hampered his game but allowed Portland to at least start with the bare eleven..
Thornbeck were only a run of the mill side but found their opponents an easy touch as very little was produced from any player in the way of commitment..
A Jimmy Rimmer mistake lead to the half's only goal as the defender, who stood so firm in defence mid week, lost the ball and allowed the winger to race through and pass the ball square for a player to stab home the ball from close range..
Sam Wilkinson saved at least two certain goal bound shots and came to the rescue on numerous occasion in the second period as his team mates in front of him just fell to pieces
Further mistakes from Cotgrave and Dawson gave Thornbeck two more gifts as the scoreline kept increasing and made an average side look good
The visitors though to their credit kept the ball moving and looked good on the eye,but it wasn't hard for them as a bewildered home side just wanted the final whistle to blow...
A shambles, woeful, call it what you like, but the eleven on duty should have at least gave it a shot and made their opponents work for the victory...........whats the saying?..oh yes,LETS JUST PUT THIS TO BED AND START AGAIN.

Due to PC malfunction some match reports from the last few weeks have not appeared.....not that there was that much to write about as the club have struggled to put a team out of late...

Get behind your Club, Team and Management lads and bloody well turn out, Miggy and Mal deserve better, lets not see another Birkdale team go to the wall. The Ayattolla and his sidekick would love that, with the squad you have you can beat anyone in that league all you need to do is show as much committment as your management team, good luck.
