    Second Team

Ainsdale's 2nd XI experienced a frustrating day at the hands of dour Newton-le-Willows opposition.

Their match started on time with Ainsdale skipper Chris Bolton deciding to take the field in the 1st innings, although missing-out on some marvellous opportunities to claim early wickets due to nervous fielding and dropped catches,Ainsdale 1st competition wicket came off the bowling of youngster Philip Causey who clean bowled the Newton opening batsman with a fine delivery, this was followed up by the dismissal of their number 3 batsman, neatly caught behind.

1st change bowler Tony Norbury ceased the opportunity to restrict scoring opportunities with some clever economical bowling, his control and accuracy was rewarded with 3 Newton wickets, the highlight being a tremendous swinging delivery, neatly caught behind by Steve Hall,at 61-4,Newton looked in real trouble however a middle order fight-back and some useful lower order batting pushed the score to 165-7 declared off a quite ridiculous 51 overs.

Newton's inability to judge a realistic chasing target meant that the Ainsdale batsmen would have to score at well over 4 an over to win the game, useful contributions from Nick Hibberd (28),Ray Fitzpatrick (15) and Matt Amer (12*) secured a useful and creditable 4 points for Ainsdale in a boring draw.

Back at Liverpool Road in the reverse first team fixture, Ainsdale's 2nd XI dominated proceedings against Caldy.

Winning the toss and electing to bat,Ainsdale openers Norman Owers and Tony Norbury launched the Ainsdale innings from ball one,Owers smashed an amazing eleven runs from the opening over, this included a marvellous 6 hit over backward square-leg.

On the fall of the first Ainsdale wicket with the scores on 42, Ainsdale were well on top,Owers (42) and Ed Fazakaerley (45) pushing Ainsdales innings close to 3 figures, some useful middle order contributions from Chris Bolton (20) and Matt Amer (19*) enabled Ainsdale to make a sporting but competitive declaration on 153-6.

In return some fine bowling from Robin Farrignton 3-22 and Tony Norbury 3-42,supported by some fine catches from Philip Causey,Ray Fitzpatrick and Owers restricted the visitors to a dour 106-7.

Ainsdale's 2nd XI had a marvellous weekend in the Liverpool Competition, winning both their games against Hightown and Caldy.

On Saturday chasing 158 to win,a brilliant innings by Nick Hibberd 74no and Ray Fitzpatrick 51 steered Ainsdale home to victory with 4 overs to spare.

On Sunday in their rearranged fixture against Caldy C.C, Ainsdale again found themselves chasing a big target, this after a selfish innings by Caldy skipper Luxon who decided to bat a massive 54 overs in his quest for personal glory, before falling 6 short of a century.

Ainsdale's Dave Evans finished with bowling figures of 6-50 from 16 overs,in reply,Ainsdale knocked off the 189 runs with just 1 over remaining, again Nick Hibberd was the foundation of the run chase, scoring a fine 59 this well supported by Tony Norbury (35),John Thompson (22) and Norman Owers (15no).

The 2nd XI won their fixture against Norhop Hall C.C in remarkable circumstances. Northop Hall batted 1st on an excellent North Wales wicket, posting a huge total of 267 for 6 declared from just 45 overs. This was not helped by Northop opening batsman Mark Cree being dropped on 17 by the luckless Norman Owers and then going on to score an amazing 151 not out to punish Ainsdale for their missed chance. Only Chris Bolton and Matt Amer were able to take wickets during the innings, Bolton with some fine spin bowling and Amer beating the batsmen for pace on numerous occasions! The excellent batting surface and lightening fast outfield aided the batsmen throughout the day.

In reply Ainsdale coasted to victory by 8 wickets, reaching the target of 267 in just 43 overs, this by far the largest winning total ever known to Ainsdale stalwarts. Major contributions during the victory came from Norman Owers (76), Ray Fitzpatrick (59), Nick Hibberd (58*) and Jordan Rogers (43*) and enabled the side to record their 8 victory of the season. Congratulations go to Ray Fitzpatrick and Nick Hibberd who both passed 500 runs for the season, Norman Owers now just needs another 52 from the remaining 2 fixtures to reach the milestone.
