Trinity went into Saturdays match with Preston G.S.A. low on form, low on moral and without four of their regulars. Black, Trewitt, Wall and Young were all absent having attended the Eccleston & Heskin Mardi Gras. It was a massive blow for the under pressure gaffer Danny Wilde who was forced to shuffle his pack and play some of third team also rans. So into the starting eleven came Coulton, Witney, Nick Wilde and Rushton who was making his last ever appearence on the green grass of the Rookery.
The game kicked off with home side kicking towards The Pete Dixon Paddock, and after 2mins they were knocking on the door of the Preston goal. A neat one two between Hodge and Mcchunk gave Hodge Trinitys first chance, but unfortunatly the old timer smashed the ball high, wide and handsome with his shot ending up in Mrs Currys back garden.
Preston G.S.A. were never in the game until the 35 min when out of the blue they went one up, with Hockey being out jumped at the far post. 0-1
Trinity were level 2 mins later with superb strike by Coulton, who's 30 yard strike never looked like it was going to be stopped by the Preston kepper. 1-1
Preston then had their second and last attack of the match had a touch of deja vu about it. A deep cross from the Preston right winger who's cross was headed in by the forward who Hockey was marking. 1-2 Half time.
Second half was a different affair for Trinity, they were dominant in every position, the football was simply the best football seen on the Rookery since the mid eighties. So it was'nt a suprise to anyone watching when Trinity scored their second. The goal came from the foot a Chris Hodge, who's stunning free kick left the Preston G.S.A. keeper rooted to the spot as the the ball nestled in his net. 2-2
Then within 5 min Trinity were in dream land with Wilde and Hodge scoring, both simple tap-ins. 4-2
With the game almost over Trinity earned a corner. A deep cross from Smyth found Rushton who out jumped four Preston G.S.A. players to head home Trinitys fifth goal of the afternoon. Final score 5-2

The curse of the penalty shoot out came back to haunt Trinity for a second time this season, and also for a second time it was the retiring Chris Hodge who was the guilty party, he was so desperate to end his career with a trip to the twin towers down Haig Avenue, but failed miserably after blasting his shot that high and wide from 12 yards, it almost capsized Simon Rushton and his (lets say friend!!!!!) canoe’s on Derwent water. This was enough to send his team crashing out of this gripping semi-final.
The goalless full-time score line did not truly reflect this pulsating end to end game, in which the woodwork was struck twice by both teams and numerous clear cut chances wasted mainly by Trinity’s Andy Wall and Chris Hodge.
Trinity started the match with a much re-shuffled deck of cards, three aces came straight out of the pack in the form of Black in goals and Young (M.O.M) and Wilde, who slotted neatly in at centre halves, there performances could only be likened to that of Franco Baresei and Gerd Muller. The three of Diamonds was next out, yes Paul Carr had been granted time off from the pole dancing world championships that were taking place in his bedroom and had the energy of a young Mick Mills. A pair of kings were next dealt on the green baize, these were the engine room of the side with Gorgeous Wall and go-long Graham holding that responsibility and emulating the grit and determination of Jimmy Case and Terry Mc Dermott in the famous Liverpool side of the early 80’s. The six and seven of clubs flew out of the pack down each wing, Aiden Coat-on and Rob Whitsunday who are both second cousins removed to the EX Southport keepe up champion George Dewsdrop. There were still three cards to be dealt and it was on the flop that the two forwards were next out, yes you guessed it Andy Wall and Kristof Hodge, a pair of lovely Queens (the pineapple head of Jason Lee from Forest comes to mind!!!), who spent most of the match deliberating which shade of lipstick went with the shirts and why there cup cakes they baked that afternoon had sunk in the middle. Well there were no cards left and Trinity were a man down, hold on a minute the manager’s Uncle has just turned up and as if by magic produced the final card as he turned the corner flag into Ali Dia, no sorry, it was Andy Hockey, yes lads, Trinity were playing there JOKER from the start!!!!!!!!!!
Correct……………. There are two JOKERS in a pack, but one of them was away doing the Eskimo roll with his “special???” friend in the Lakes.
Unlucky lads you all deserve credit for that performance, don’t forget last game of the season on Saturday, Top Spinners away meet club 12.45pm.
