A Christmas present which Southport could have well done without has left the Princess Diana Memorial Fountain on Lord Street out of order.
Unfortunately, the contractors delivering the 2017 Lord Street Christmas tree decided it was a good idea to take their heavy truck onto the fountain base to crane the Christmas tree off onto the paved area of the Town Gardens below.
The weight of the lorry damaged the fountain which has required the area to be fenced off with ugly railings ever since.
Southport Lib Dem Councillor Jo Barton is concerned that the fountain should be restored to use in time for the visitors starting to arrive in numbers at Easter. Since the fountain was installed, every year it has become a focal point for children's play in the warmer weather - so it is a major part of the town's summer 'draw'.
Says Jo:
"As a child. I watched with interest as Princess Diana became the focus of the nation's attention. The fountain is our town's tribute to the Princess' charity work. "
"I am saddened that it is now lying in disrepair and I have asked the Council's Chief Executive to ensure that the Council takes urgent action to repair it and return it to use before the Easter Holidays."
A more fitting tribute to Diana would have been a giant bucket and spade in recognition of all the holidays she took at our expense.
.....and whilst we're about it - any idea where the readys will come from to pay for the repairs which are clearly a priority (in some eyes). Surely the Lib Dems remember cutting all the budgets?

Surely the repairs should be paid for by the insurers of the vehicle that was driven past the "no vehicles beyond this point" signs.

If you were driving a vehicle and A N Other directed you beyond such a such a sign would you follow them?
I believe the contractors were engaged by the BID.

Shouldn’t she be more worried about her colleague Cllr Lewis abandoning his electorate of Norwood to run surgeries in her ward with they other two guys?
