On New Years Day 2012, Jamie Vardy scored twice in a 6–0 win over Southport playing for Fleetwood Town in the Conference, yesterday he picked up a Premier League title with Leicester City after Chelsea and Tottenham drew 2-2.
Fleetwood sold Vardy to Leicester City for a reported fee of £1m and he is now a title winner and England international.
Over the years several Southport players have progressed into the Football League including Andy Mutch (Wolves/Swindon Town) Steve Whitehall (Rochdale/Oldham), Carl Baker (Morecambe, Stockport County, Coventry and MK Dons) and Mark Duffy (Morecambe/Birmingham) being the most notable but none have made the impact that Vardy has.
