Southport welcome York to the Merseyrail Community Stadium on Tuesday night, a clash between two sides languishing at the wrong end of the table and under their second manager of the season.

Southport moved off the bottom of the table at the first time of asking on Saturday thanks to the draw at home to Sutton United, and the nature of the performance will have given hope to fans that three more points are on the way under the lights on Tuesday.

For York, new manager Gary Mills marked his first league game back at Bootham Crescent with a 1-1 draw with Chester, following on from a shock FA Cup exit at the hands of Curzon Ashton. The Minsterman have failed to win a match since the 3rd September, a record that Southport will hope to prolong and in doing so stretch their own unbeaten run to three games, which would be a season best.

Port fans will be familiar with York’s top scorer Richard Brodie, who has five goals so far this term. Also returning to his old stomping ground is left-back Alex Whittle, a key cog in the side that sealed survival with a rich vein of form at the end of the 2015/16 season. Both players are still held in high regard by the Southport faithful, but that is not to say home fans will be happy to see either player have an enjoyable evening on Tuesday.

A win for Southport could see them move level on points with 20th placed Woking and in prime position to move out of the relegation zone very soon. If performances like that against Sutton and Chester keep coming, it is surely only a matter of time until there are at least four teams below the Sandgrounders in the league table.
