There have been calls for a radical solution to the continuing problems caused by accidents at the busy Fiveways junction in Ormskirk.

Last night, a minor RTA at tea time between an Astra van and Peugeot 108 saw parts of the town all but grind to a halt with Southport bound traffic worse affected.

The bump happened at around 6.30pm with Police, a paramedic and ambulance crew attending; traffic was still stationary on Southport Road at around 9pm.

One radical solution suggested by two QLocal readers from Aughton and Ormskirk who regularly use the busy junction - the installation of a mini roundabout there.

"And while they're at it, the County Council should also consider one at the end of Green Lane and Hayfield Road," said a plumber from Ormskirk.

Another solution is for people to drive carefully.

Driving carefully is the only option.
Lancashire will never spend money on road improvements which benefit Southport. The Ormskirk bypass will never happen.

This from a Lancashire CC/W Lancs Masterplan
    "Ormskirk Bypass
Plans to build a bypass of Ormskirk will no longer be pursued as an option for West Lancashire. A recent study has shown current congestion is largely caused by local traffic, limiting the benefit of a bypass and meaning that a combination of other proposals as outlined in the masterplan will be more effective and funded more quickly. The prospect of the Thornton Link providing additional relief also has the potential to give a similar result to the bypass."

So, according to the Lancs CC planners, the best route for motorway access from Southport is via Thornton and Switch Island even if you live in the north of the town and are travelling north or east.

Lancashire County Council has one single agenda for the roads, installing average speed cameras.

Good. Speed plays a part in most of the accidents along this stretch of road. Those of us who do drive carefully and don’t speed have nothing to worry about. You can now safely drive down the Tarleton by-pass with out the hoards of idiots speeding up and down since the introduction of the average speed cameras on that stretch of road.

No such thing as a dangerous junction, just dangerous drivers.

I would suggest that the police approach to these type of incidents is wrong. How long does it take to take a few photo’s, drag the vehicles out of the way and sweep up the mess? rather than blocking the road and causing chaos for hours
