" The Liverpool "
I am never supprised what shows up on a day to day basis
A pair of binoculars from the ship " The Liverpool "
this is a clip of divers swimming through the wreck
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8N8DPcd3ZE
this story in the midst of being writen 8th Mar 2012
I am now researching if theses binoculars are off the this same ship or are they off another ship called "The Liverpool."
HELP PLEASE
How many " The Liverpool " are there.
they look mid to late victorian pair of binoculars
no makers name
just impressed on the brass sights "THE LIVERPOOL" in Caps.
"THE LIVERPOOL" LEFT LONDON ON DEC 30th 1863. ON HER WAY SHE CALLED AT PLYMOUTH, PENZANCE, HENCE THE TIN INGOTS. SHE COLLIDED WITH THE LAPLATA WHICH HAD LEFT LIVERPOOL BOUND FOR LIMA PERU. BOTH VESSELS EVENTUALLY SANK, THE LIVERPOOL GOING DOWN FIRST.
or may be the life boat
http://www.old-merseytimes.co.uk/MAXWELL.html
The steamer SS Liverpool was carrying tin ingots from Cornwall and sank in 1863 after colliding with the barque Laplata, which had just left Liverpool on its way to Lima, Peru. The wreck lies just off the north coast of Anglesey and between Middle Mouse Island and the coast.

The Liverpool
My father has a pair of binoculars that are very similar, possibly identical, to those in the picture. The inscription on the sight glasses is "THE LIVERPOOL". My father remembers that they were given to my grandfather in the 1940s or 1950s by a sailor friend who used to visit their house in Swansea whenever his ship docked in Swansea Docks. Unfortunately that is all the information we have and we do not know the name of my grandfather's friend's ship. After the Second World War my grandfather worked as a security guard at the oil terminal at Swansea Docks until his retirement in the late 1950s. That might or might not be significant.
I would be happy to send a photograph of the binoculars if that would be of interest.
