inherited chair
Hello John ~
Please could you estimate the value of this chair?
As you see, there is some damage to one side, and I was wondering whether you know of anyone who could tackle the repair?
The chair was inherited from my Mum, and I don't know anything about its history ... please could could you give me some idea of its age, as I'd like to have it re-upholstered in a fabric appropriate to its era. (I'm assuming that the current floral/tapestry design is a relatively recent addition!)
Many thanks!

Hi.
Even though the chair is made to a good standard it carries little value.
Double sided cane chairs carry a higher value.
Going by the size it is a bedroom chair or nursing chair.
Made of Mahogany wood with short cabriol leg on a ball and claw foot.
It was made at the turn of the 20th century.
The damage to the bergeres or cane work makes the chair worthless.
Repairing a chair like this may cost between 50p and £1 a hole.
As you have said the seat has been reupholstered.
What you can do is find some cane from an old chair and glue the cane to the damaged strands. This at least makes the chair look acceptable.
In an auction I would expect the chair to make £20 to £30
Good luck. __________________

Many thanks for such a helpful reply!
Knowing that the chair isn't of any value as such is something of a relief, as the damage was caused by my mischievous dog, a couple of months ago!
It's a useful little chair ... so I'll have a bash at the D.I.Y repair.
Bestest,
Tua.
