    Following the Science?

    I think not.

They have kept people controlled for far too long when the Scientific Evidence has been to the contrary, Golf, Bowls, Croquet, Participation in Football, Rugby, Cricket should never have been stopped.

I suppose much of the reasoning for this is that during lockdown it was essential travel only, to help ensure there was no additional pressure put on the NHS from road traffic incidents or even sports injuries.

Compare that with the odds on blood clots and the AZ vaccination.

    In Ireland only?
How many positive Covid transmissions from those contacts led to deaths?

By keeping people locked down unnecessarily there has probably been more deaths and injuries due to suicide & domestic violence apart from the future mess of mental health that will require sorting out.

I keep hearing this argument but am yet to see any evidence to support it.

You only have to pick up any local newspaper or look at their websites to see how much these crimes have increased.

What other reasoning can you come up with for the rise in all these incidents if it isn't lockdown?

Amazing the ignorance despite a tremendous amount of information from reputable sources.

Working out why mass participation pastimes and sports are banned isn't too complicated.

Yes officer I'm not breaking lockdown I am going to play ........... fill in your favourite.

While it's true that Covid is less transmissible outdoors, the Irish Times report is deceptive.

The 262 cases are taken from known reported outbreaks in an outdoor setting. They have failed to consider the number of cases that might have occurred as a direct result of 262 people transmitting the disease. There's a lot that goes on before and after an outdoor event/work etc. The exponential spread has to be considered.

I understand why they can't possibly ascertain this number, but to state that only .1% of Covid cases are due to outdoor transmission is misleading. As the Irish Health Surveillance Protection Centre states in the article, 20% of Ireland's cases are due to community spread, and they have no idea what the source of the infection is.

Why would you be prepared to take the (claimed, but untrue) 1 in 1,000 risk of contracting Covid outdoors, yet kick up about the 1 in 253,000 risk of blood clots from the AZ vaccine?

It isn't 1 in 1,000 chance of catching it outdoors it is 1 in 1,000 occurrences occurred outdoors, I'm not talking about attending events I'm talking out a couple of old blokes wandering around a field playing with their balls, there would be more risk to their mental health prohibiting them than the risk of them catching the disease, similarly with kids playing football, BOJO has always been going on about the kids needing to get back to school for their mental health, sport also plays a big part in the kids health and well being.
These sports are naturally social distanced so the chance of catching the virus is even less.

Sorry but I lack patience for this conflation of 'government control' with medical restrictions that are necessary but not permanent. To hear and read comments made by the public you would think we were a nation of epidemiologists, statisticians and public health doctors and that lockdown was to be in place forever. Scientists may be annoyingly contradictory at times but I'll take them over Joe (I do my own research on the internet) Public.
It's the same as conflating 'freedom' with not wearing a mask, or vaccine passports as discrimination. Not everyone can have everything all the time so if you choose to not be vaccinated then you should find that there are consequences that you might not like. Some may like to characterise this as discrimination against the poor - phooey to that!
At the moment we are all weary of restrictions but that doesn't mean that they aren't important. When the next pandemic comes the disease may be more infectious, or waterborne, or by contact so let's think of this frankly bl**dy awful last year as a dry run for when something worse comes along. Perhaps by then we can be more clear sighted about what's important.
