Hindsight? We had months of advance warning it was on its way and failed to act swiftly enough.
And we're still in the thick of it thanks to dither, delay and incompetence.

Given the seriousness of the situation the UK and it's people handled it very well . I think you are losing the fact that it was unprecedented. All nations were caught on the hop .

Yet we have many more dead than countries who handled it far better.

Months of warning ?
I might jog your thoughts of the reality with this;
https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-00919-3
Maybe you could tell us what to prepare for next?
You surely don't want to be joining Captain Hindsight.
Think of the likes of Sars,Ebola,Mers etc
Tell me what to do I am all ears.

First outbreak in China Nov 2019. We did nothing for 4 months. And as your link says, we knew for years that we were unprepared for any pandemic despite one of some sort being likely.

Not months but years of advance warning from Exercises Alice & Cygnus.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exercise_Alice
...was one of a number of pandemic-planning exercises prior to the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom. Some of the key issues raised in the report became problems in the early weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic, including shortages of personal protective equipment, failure to impose pandemic-related travel restrictions from overseas, and failure to have a working contact tracing system.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...at-did-it-find
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exercise_Cygnus
....Results from the exercise identified four main learning points and 22 further recommendations. In general, it showed that the pandemic would cause the country's health system to collapse from a lack of resources, with Sally Davies, the Chief Medical Officer at the time, stating that a lack of medical ventilators and the logistics of disposal of dead bodies were serious issues.
The Daily Telegraph reported one government source as saying that the results of the simulation were "too terrifying" to be revealed.
Logistically, more health workers and resources such as ventilators, personal protective equipment (PPE) and hospital beds are required to face a large pandemic. Investigation also showed that the reverse triage strategy proposed by the NHS, whereby patients are moved from hospitals to social care, may not be well supported by the current social care system.
Further recommendations
Department of Education should investigate the impact of school closures on the wider community.
The process and timeline of front line responders need to be made more precise.
A framework for analysing social care and surge capacity needs to be established.
The potential for increasing social care real-estate and staff numbers need to be examined.
Strategies to allocate voluntary resources during a pandemic need to be developed with advice from non-health departments.
Excess death management needs review.
Pandemic contingency plans and procedures as a whole require more development.
In March 2020, according to The Sunday Times, Downing Street officials found follow-up planning from Exercise Cygnus lacking, with one stating that it "never went into the operational detail".

Great you have read some of the problems now tell me what to prepare for next and how?
I forgot to answer the much repeated PPE nonsense
from the Guardian, we had a lot;
[I]That stockpile is made up of around 52,000 pallets of equipment worth an estimated £500m.
The problem was distribution and which disaster to plan for.
Still our armchair hindsight Professors will get around their crystal balls and tell us what's coming next.

This government's reaction, especially in the first six months, was symptomatic of a wider malaise.
We know the virus originated in the far east and took several months to move westward.
As it did, governments in its path took measures.
We could have learned from that, that it was inevitable and with early strict measures we might have had more chance to resist it.
But such is the nationalistic arrogance of this government that they either did not find out, or simply ignored, the experience elsewhere.
This carried on. A few months in, when we had massive problems locating ventilators, despite Brexit the EU and Germany in particular offered some. We declined. I can't for the life of me think of a single reason why you would do that.
And then earlier this year, with infection rocketing and in particular Delta getting a grip, we delayed closing down incomers from India. Apparently because we wanted a trade deal. What genius thought that India would walk away because we wanted to protect ourselves?

We have experts and scientists for that sort of thing but a government that doesn't take their advice.

You can't dodge the question, the scientists did advise them, they followed it and yet you still criticise.
Come on tell me, do I need a hard hat, a mask or a gun for the zombies?

Ah because they said they were following the science you take it at face value that a government of proven liars were telling the truth.

I'd wager that without Brexit, Corbyn would be in charge now. 2% behind the Tories in the polls. Didn't you have to pay the DUP billions just to stay in?
Now, considering this, and as I said on another thread I'm well aware of Corbyn's failings, do you think he'd have let the NHS go to pot? Do you think he'd have spent billions on cronies and friends who work down the pub and have no clue about PPE or medical supplies? Do you think he'd have allowed super-spreader events like horse racing to go ahead? Do you think he'd have missed COBRA meetings while the world entered a global pandemic? Hid in a fridge? Lied through his teeth?
There's no 'hindsight' because it never happened. But he came very very close. Then in 2019 more people voted for pro-remain parties than Brexit parties. Let's face it, this system of elections hasn't delivered what the public want since Baldwin won in 1935.
You think with actual hindsight, you'd have Johnson as leader of the Tory party? Seriously?
Given that the majority of voters who actually voted in the Brexit Referendum are likely to be the people that voted in the 2019 General Election, I find your second sentence rather strange. The majority voted for Brexit, likely the same majority who consigned a Corbyn led Labour Party to its heaviest Election defeat in 84 years. Labour would never, ever have won a GL with Corbyn at the helm.
