Re: post #45: "It will not be part of the Marine Lake."

The only indication of the scale (250m long beach that I have seen) and the dimensions of Princes Park (courtesy one of the online map applets) make me wonder how the wave pool plus hotel, etc. will be configured within the space available.

Can anyone supply a link to a web page offering more details? I am interested to know more. How many rooms in the promised hotel? What amenities are available to hotel guests and any other visitors? Should we suppose the benefits are exclusively limited to hotel guests and/or those paying for day admission?

The images are alluring (as these things go), but probably do not give an accurate impression of the plan.

I've been looking for a site plan, but there's nothing out there, presumably because they're still negotiating access, car park etc?

There's a big 'empty' area between the Ocean Plaza and Pleasureland, so I guess it'll primarily be there. As a guess, I would think they'll take over that scruffy car park next to the go-karts and make it the main entrance and car park, but who knows?

A fly-through video simulation would be great, like they produced at the time for the Promenade Casino/Hotel/Floral Hall development proposals.

Princes Park is roughly 200m x 170cm so it's safe to assume the beach won't be in a straight line. A curve or 2 or more stretches at right angles perhaps...

I think you might as well discuss the size of a Unicorns horn.

This pie in the sky proposal has been put forward by dreamers for the gullible to get excited about.

I have to admit that those were my initial thoughts.

However, having seen the website of the one in Bristol, which seems to be up and running, it remains to be seen if Southport could attract enough 'bums on seats' to make it viable.

There have been various discussions on here about the need for a flagship attraction to revive the town's fortunes, and this could be it.

I still wonder, though, how Morecambe got the Eden Project North (due 2023) and Southport didn't get a look-in.

It seems to be a private company with 2 main founders, although they got some crowdfunding.

If you go here https://www.thewave.com/ and click 'About Us' you'll see the management team.

It seems to be very much for diehard surfers (and is, of course, much closer to Cornwall) and doesn't seem to have a beach. My initial reaction was about the weather - things like this should really be in a huge dome.

That certainly looks a different set up to the optimistic pictures that accompany the Southport offering.

How would we get to "150,000 client visits a year"

Without as you say weatherproofing I can't imagine many on the beach for 6-7 months a year.

Chill Factore in Manchester had half a million visits in 10 years - 50,000 annually
Sandcastle @ Blackpool claims 150,000 annually but that is in doors.

Looking at the pictures you would be hard pressed to get the 500 or so daily visitors required in the place.

Discount the images accompanying the press release and what remains?
    • a very sketchy aspiration for a major attraction for Southport's visitor economy

Recall previous suggestions of a Resort development adjacent to the Marine Lake.

    World Class Waterfront ?

It is one thing to float a trial balloon and quite another to attract investors. It is concerning that the Council may barter away some piece of real estate to 'sweeten the deal' for private developers. Southport residents and other interested parties need to reserve judgment at such an early stage. I hope our Councillors are doing whatever they can to keep Cllr. Marion Atkinson and her Sefton Cabinet colleagues properly accountable.
[Having said, are our Southport Councillors likely to take a detached view of any such development? Doubtful.]
Public access to the amenities we currently have should not be compromised.

I've just been on Companies House rummaging through the spaghetti of subs/companies associated with The Wave Group.

The Wave Group was funded in part by a combination of debt and equity financing from Jar Capital. The debt piece came from one of Jar Capital's subs: Jar Real Estate Fund PCC in Gibraltar. A British sub, Jar Wave, was established by Jar Capital in 2018. The Wave Group's debt to Jar and Jar's investment in The Wave group are carried on Jar Wave's books. The Wave Group carries the debt on one of their sub's balance sheet: The Wave Group (Midco). The equity sits on The Wave Group's balance sheet.

The founders of The Wave Group are no longer the majority shareholders. Jar Wave's initial investment in The Wave was >25%, but <50%. Since then they have increased their share to >50%, but <75%, which means that Jar Wave is the ultimate parent company.

I was hoping their financials were filed to see how profitable their company is. However the financials have only been filed for their start up period in 2017-2018. As The Wave didn't open for business until late 2019, both years have an operating loss.

I might be wrong, but I don't think the Southport people, Go Surf, are connected directly with the Wave Group, if at all. I only linked to the Bristol site as an example of a surf pool.

If you look on Companies House, Go Surf was only incorporated in September of this year, and shows the address as a consultancy in Liverpool.

It's common for companies to set up new ones for new ventures so that neither is responsible for the other's liabilities, but neither of the listed Go Surf directors are connected with the Bristol one. This looks like a new venture by 'local lads'.

It is likely to stay on the "drawing board" for the foreseeable.
