A 'world class' water park is set to be built on Lancashire's doorstep creating over one hundred jobs and adding millions to the North West economy.
Go Surf has teamed up with Sefton Council to create Southport Cove Resort, which will open all year round through what the council has called a "world class wave pool at its heart".
The surf pool will use technology to create waves that are taller than two metres for accomplished surfers, with 50cm waves available for those looking for a more relaxed day out.
A 250 metre long beach will be created with a 360-degree boardwalk and planted gardens.
Built on the Southport seafront, the resort will be home to a wellness and spa facility with four-star accommodation, restaurants and cafes, and indoor leisure facilities.

I recall similar plans a few years ago, to create a water and leisure feature, using Pontins land and the lake by the Sands pub.

Could be wrong but didn't Sefton buy Toad Hall etc in preparation for this scheme ?

I know Rotten Row can be a tad sluggish to drain, but really - world class water park?

Which is the actual designated plot of land for all the waterworlds,4 Star hotel etc. It does not look like its an indoor attraction. So hardly an all year around venue.Surely pleasureland should be involved after all the money and work Norman has put into Southport over the years??

Like so many of these plans (wasn't there supposed to be some kind of wave power barrage /marina) it sounds great if it actually happens.

I guess it would be quite an attraction in the warmer months, but as Penthouse says, not a year round one.

I'm still wondering about the money they are about to spend on the market that nobody uses, TBH.

…it is surprisingly ambitious. Note the (3!) giant 'live action' video screens and surfers. If the outfit contracted to build this attraction managed to live up to this seemingly hyperbolic promotional material, I suspect it would attract year-round activity. People who engage in surfing (even on this modest scale) go to great lengths.

It appears the intention is to transform the Marine Lake into a surfers paradise! The big question is: Can they pull it off? The allusion to the 'wave power' barrage is apposite.

Never happen in Southport,as per usual all "pie in the sky ideas" making everyone think something is good going to happen,and then "Bang" there goes another one.....Someone will get a decent backhander out of this planning idea being put onto paper....

Looks great on the artists impression with a couple of dozen people in there, not too sure what it would look like with a “full house”.

Not sure what the capacity of the open air pool was but I would have thought it was several thousand, to make this viable it would have to be
a) very expensive admission
b) pack large numbers in
c) both

Bearing in mind potentially such a short season, hand on heart I can’t see it happening when all the number crunching has been done.

Acording to the BBC this is just part of a plan to be submitted to try to get money form the government's £3.6bn Towns Fund.
Not as being reported something that is going ahead.

Unfortunately, it seems that someone with no money is just flying a kite.

Even if they had the money, I couldn't see something like that as financially viable, given the small size of the site and the short British 'summer' season.

A good point it takes longer to supply "bog rolls" to the council.

Perhaps the council's potential suppliers should use more graphics.

Surely though its a joint venture and a new company was created for that joint venture between the company and the council? That is what normally happens. Therefore the fact it was incorporated in September could be perfectly normal.

There are two reasons why this is not just a fly by night scheme. First of all the council are part of the company, and there is the Town Deal bid which maybe allocated funds towards this if successful. It would appear that the funding would come from several sources. The council, the town deal and private banks. The banks willingness to lend money will be significantly enhanced if the council are funding some money (presumably loaned from the government in the same way the Strand was bought)up and their is capital already from the Town Deal (if successful). The new company will carry the risk of the default and the loan will be on the new company.

That's how I see it. So its far more positive than people think.
