Set of 4 vintage dining chairs

    Hi,

I'm wondering whether it is possible for you to take a look at some items I'm in the process of selling.

As per the photographs, there includes four dining chairs. The type of wood is unknown but I'm sure you would be able to identify them far easier than a novice like me. All of the chairs come with the seats which will need recovering. The general condition of the chairs is fine structural, but as you can see from the pictures there is some cosmetic attention required. That said the chairs would be quite attractive to the right person.

There is always a good news and a bad news to a valuation.

The bad news is your chairs are reproduction and made of a inferior woods and in most cases the back tends to become loose.

The good news a chair like yours where originally designed by the famous Thomas Chippendale in the late 1700s, They where originally made in England and made out of imported mahogany.

Thomas Chippendale of Otley, a Yorkshireman born 1718 and died 1779. Became a London cabinet-maker and furniture designer in the mid-Georgian period. English Rococo, and Neoclassical styles. In 1754 he published a book of his designs, titled The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director. The designs are regarded as reflecting the London fashion of the day for furniture and have been used by other cabinet makers all over the world, even to this day.

Back in the late Victorian period 1880s there was a Chippendale revival and again in the 1920/30's and yet again in the 1950's
As you can see Chippendale style has always been desirable and in vogue .

In the 1970's a very talented antique dealer from Liverpool decided to recreate the whole of the Chippendale range. He set up his business in Indonesia and a new reproduction range was born.

In my opinion the items that where made in those early days c1978 -c1985 where as good as Thomas Chippendale made. But as competition moved into the market from the Philippines and alike, quality and the price changed and went on a downward spiral.

In 1980 chair like yours retailed for over £1000 back
In 2000 the price was £75

Lots of villages fort for business, even children started carving to help keep the price down.

The quality of the carving and the quality of the wood chosen became inferior.
Items like yours was sold by Coach House, Dutch Connection and even by myself at a retail price of £90-£125

To day in auction £80 -£120 would be the estimate for a set of 4 chairs

For house insurance purpose a set of 4 Chippendale style Ball and Claw foot chairs £295 per chair .

    good luck

Thanks John for your help with this. The information you gave was very detailed and comprehensive - thank you.

I also have a cabinet which I'm in two minds with what to do with. As with the chairs the cabinet is a fairly solid piece of furniture. I don't know of the wood type but I would guess it is oak? The general condition is fine but with some cosmetic attention it could be a very attractive cabinet to the right person.

The Cabinet is of European design and has been adapted in design for modern day living.

Most items like this was made in Indonesia in the 1990s when the country flooded England with furniture.

Most where made of teak and from trees from the Mahogany family.
The wood used was found in bog and very wet and damp areas. This is why you find a lot of pin holes in the wood from worm type creatures. If made of oak it is more likely of being made in China.
But going by the construction and the escutcheon and hinges I bet it is Indonesian.

Your cabinet retailed from £495 to £550 in 2000, but to day in auction may reach £100

Painted white this item would still retail for £500 in a high street shop.

    good luck

    Thank you John,
It is very nice to get a professional opinion on these items.
I actually found out after much research that the coffee pot and cups are a type of noritake nippon scenic coffee set called tree in the meadow.

If you have any more time would you mind taking a look at some of these items?

the cabinet unit is not antique and is not English.

In the world of antiques the cabinet is not commercial

    and would have little value.

    may be £100

the triptych mirror is also not antique.

I would imagine £30 would be a fair price to pay in a second hand shop.

    good luck

    Picture

This is a photograph of a picture I have just inherited. The back of the photograph shows that it is entitled Chanson de Bilitis and it's a lithograph from Galbeakin Museum, Lisbon (apologies for mis-spelling but writing is not good). It measures in its frame 37" x 31". Is this something you would be interested in please and/or what is its likely value.

Look forward to hearing from you and will post some other stuff if that's o.k. as I really have no idea where to start.

    Random pots

Absolutely no markings and some damage to lids but appear to be very old - for valuation please.

Thanks in advance for any help you are able to give and I think I may have to call into the shop with silverware, paintings, etc.
