Birkdale's Lee Durkin is pursuing funding for a number of damaged metal street name signs after raising this last year.

He told QLocal: “After visiting Birkdale and Hillside before the very first Covid Lockdown in 2020, I made a record of damaged signs at the time which I reported to the Council for maintenance.”

“I’d just like to point out that I recognize and am pleased that other people have also reported signs, sometimes before me, however I’d like to bring attention to some of the older signs which really need urgent attention.”

“Plates like Ashton Road are at risk of being lost altogether if they are not fixed as soon as they fall into disrepair. As a part of the street furniture for several decades now, these cannot be faithfully replicated by manufacturers employed by the Council today if left much longer.”

“I had hoped that the Council might have considered getting these signs and others fixed by now, which have lost almost all their lettering like at Liverpool Road, Clive Road and Kent Road as a few examples. Also, with there being district funds available for projects like this, I might have expected that these would have been identified for urgent upkeep given some of these are also main roads, but I just hope better late than never may still apply here.”

“I will be continuing to see if we can get the most run-down signs mended sooner, although I hope that sitting councillors may do the right thing and agree funding for the worst condition ones as a matter of Keeping Birkdale and Hillside as the Jewel in the Crown of Southport.”

If anyone would like to get in touch please contact Lee at Lee Durkin-Birkdale Campaigner on Facebook.

Finger on the pulse this fellah.
Good to know there's nothing more serious than this affecting the population of Birkdale.

Odd that he doesn't mention he's a Tory candidate. Is he ashamed?

I do miss the good old days when people had to know how to point before being allowed on this site.

I blame the cycle lanes for this lowering of standards.

Almost as wooden as the fence behind him. God forbid he gets elected but if he does will he actually get anything done, or will he be the same as the other Tories

I wonder what it would take for Durkin to realise that it is a result of his party's ideologically driven cuts to council budgets that these things are falling apart?

He could stop propping the wall up and repaint them himself.

Agree, too many pointless pics nowadays.

Disagree on cycle lanes - the point is, a town can never have enough of them.

Why the need for a hi-vis jacket?
Was it dress up day at nursery?
