Cllr. John Pugh has expressed the view that commonsense may still win out in the continuing battle over cycle lanes, arguing that the Council will be reluctant to proceed with all its current plans in the face of a largely negative result from the consultation.
“My understanding is that there is going to be quite a bit of back-pedalling.The consultation looked for and needed “broad public support” for the new schemes stretching from Churchtown to Ainsdale, but it is widely known that the consultation shows “ broadpublic opposition".
In those circumstances the government funding behind all this would be in doubt. The issue is what is to happen to the significant amount of money given to Sefton for the purpose of building cycle lanes and whether Sefton will be penalised by the government for not pressing ahead as has happened in other boroughs.” https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/...uncils-funding
“It was a huge mistake by Sefton to proceed this far without prior consultation with local Southport councillors and hopefully some of the right lessons are being learnt.
It’s still though a bit of a mess currently and the average Southport resident would be justified in finding it all confusing and thinking the town is being a used as an experimental lab.
There are currently three different schemes on the go, working to different timetables - the existing lanes through the town centre done under Covid regulations, the liveable streets scheme and the cross town Churchtown to Ainsdale route.
Nobody is sure quite what the council is trying to do or how it will know if it’s done it.
We still haven't had the evaluation of the Houghton St scheme which was done without consultation under the government’s emergency regulations."
