My weekly article on my activities in Parliament.
This week I dropped in to several important events in Parliament. Leonard Cheshire held an event ahead of International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3rd. Leonard Cheshire are campaigning for better support for disabled people on their journey to and whilst in work. I was pleased to hear more about their work.
I also dropped by to Charities Aid Foundation’s Giving Tuesday event. Giving Tuesday is a day of global giving and an antidote to the spending of Black Friday. Last year the event raised $64 million was donated globally.
On Tuesday I celebrated Lancashire Day in Parliament with Andrew Stephenson MP. In 1295 the ‘Red Rose’ county first sent representatives to Parliament. I was delighted to celebrate some of the county’s best local producers and the historic county.
In addition to my usual meetings with the Petitions and Science & Technology committees, I sat on a Delegated Legislation Committee on trade barriers.
Lastly something different! I attended the Political Cartoon on the Year Awards 2018. The awards are a celebration of the role political cartoons plain in shaping the way the public perceives a party, event, or individual politician; in a time when maintaining a freedom of speech and a free press has never been more relevant.
Between Wednesday and Friday, I was away from Parliament on the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme at HM Naval Base Portsmouth. During the visit I got an overview of the Naval Base, its operations and facilities. I am greatly enjoying the Armed Forces scheme and the insight that it is giving me into this essential public service.
Wouldn’t leave clearing your desk for much longer. Especially after today’s joyous news about the tories getting defeated again in Parliament. This shambolic parties days in office look like they’re numbered now.
