Two weeks ago Birkdale's Lib Dem councillors organised a massively successful exercise distributing free "whips" for local residents to plant in their gardens. Now residents have another chance to collect a free tree this Saturday 1st March, this time in Birkdale Village between 11.00am and 12.00 noon.
Birkdale's councillors Simon Shaw (pictured) and Iain Brodie Browne have worked with Mersey Forest and the local authority to secure a further supply of whips for residents to plant. Whips are young trees around 2-3 feet high.
“We had an amazing turnout two weeks ago, with over 170 residents turning up at the Red Chapel in Birkdale to collect their free tree," says Cllr Simon Shaw. "In fact it was so popular that we ran out and we promised people that we would try and organise a follow-up event."
"So this Saturday we will be at the end of Birkdale Village, on the pavement opposite Sainsbury's Local - at the Liverpool Road/Welbeck Road corner."
Cllr Iain Brodie Browne added “We will have four or five varieties for residents to choose from, so there is something to suit every garden. It is important to remember that trees and woods can help to improve the quality of our air, cool our warming plant, reduce the risk of flooding as well as function as an excellent store of carbon, so we hope that everyone who is interested will turn up ... and get planting."
