I'm glad to see Iam not the only one that calls the 'Flying Rats'.

Do you remember ' Pigeon Anne' in 1960's + who used to feed the pigeons on Lord Street, by hand. She was really quick, to neck them and put them in her basket.

It's good practice for them. They'd still be getting paid sitting at the fire station.

Practicing rescuing feral pigeons doesn't strike me as a good use of scarce resources.

Presumably you would not have objected to the“waste of resources” had it been you trapped rather than a pigeon?
Surely you realise that the firefighters need to practise to keep their skills up to date? They don’t just train initially then for the rest of their careers sit around waiting for fires and other emergencies to happen. Training is ongoing throughout their careers and aspects of this exercise with the pigeon would have been transferable to a real life rescue of a person. Better than a ‘mock up’ exercise in the fire station yard as this was a real life situation in a location that might have been unfamiliar to some of them.
So carry on rescuing pigeons, cats, dogs, cows, horses or whatever needs to be helped. It is all good experience and ongoing training for the firefighters young and old.
